Cereal variety and population selection Organic Eprints
Jones, Hannah.
This research review notes that cereal variety breeding in the last 50 years has been based on pedigree line bred varieties as part of the development of a production system dependent on oil-based inputs. The characteristics desirable for an organic system are frequently at odds with those designed for non-organic systems. Despite this, varietal choice for organic farmers remains largely from the pool of varieties developed for non-organic production. The challenges to address are on what basis can farmers and advisers select varieties, and how to develop varieties suitable for organic production. Plant characteristics are discussed and main desirable features outlined under the headings of: • Nutrient use efficiency • Disease resistance • Weed...

CEREALICOLTURA BIOLOGICA: INTERVENTI AGROTECNICI E GENETICI PER IL MIGLIORAMENTO QUANTI-QUALITATIVO DEL FRUMENTO DURO E TENERO E LA VALORIZZAZIONE DEI PRODOTTI DERIVATI Organic Eprints
In order to guarantee a suitable income to the farmers and respond to the consumers’ demand, European Commission has proposed new guidelines for the cultivation of cereals. Such proposal strictly depends on: previous decisions of the Community which didn’t give the expected results; the presence of new exporting countries on the international market; the variable cereal production of the last years. Being the new guidelines involving further economic sacrifices of the cereal farmers this project would become essential to recover a strong competitiveness on the international cereals' market. The competitiveness of cereal sector can be increased by innovative high quality varieties and the set up of suitable cultural techniques maximizing the germoplasm...

Chancen und Potenziale verschiedener Züchtungsmethoden für den Ökolandbau Organic Eprints
Messmer, Monika; Hildermann, Isabell; Arncken, Christine; Drexler, Dora; Wilbois, Klaus-Peter.

Characteristics of spring barley varieties and crop diversity for organic farming and variety testing Organic Eprints
Østergård, H.; Jensen, J.W..
Results from Danish spring barley variety trials including about 50-120 varieties and variety mixtures on three locations over three years under organic as well as conventional farming systems demonstrate the importance of genotype-environment interactions. This has implications for potential future organic VCU-testing; here results are shown for grain yield. Further, grain yield results from of six variety mixtures and their 14 component varieties indicate that variety mixtures may be less influenced by genotype-environment interactions compared to pure line varieties.

Charakterisierung der Resistenz deutscher Weizensorten gegenüber Weizenflugbrand (Ustilago tritici) Organic Eprints
Hobert, M.; Kopahnke, D.; Ordon, F..

Wächter, Dr. Rebecca; Wolf, Dr. Gerhard; Koch, Dr. Eckhard.
Attack with common bunt (Tilletia caries) is a potential threat to wheat production in organic farming. The situation may even become worse if (in agreement with EU-legislation) only organically produced seed is used in organic farming. The targeted use of resistant varieties could be a way to alleviate the problem. However, knowledge regarding bunt resistance of wheat varieties on the one hand and aggressiveness in populations of the bunt pathogen on the other hand is still insufficient. In the frame of a federal research programme for organic farming (BÖL),30 winter wheat varieties and breeding lines were studied at five different locations using spores of local origin in order to assess the natural level of resistance (WÄCHTER et al. 2004). In addition,...

Climate Change Effects on Plant Ecosystems – Genetic Resources for Future Barley Breeding Organic Eprints
Ingvordsen, Cathrine Heinz.
Climate Change Effects on Plant Ecosystems – Genetic Resources for Future Barley Breeding. A growing population and a considerable increase in living standards worldwide are increasing the demand on the primary production. At the same time, climate change is projected to lower the primary production due to increases in the atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide ([CO2]) and ozone ([O3]), rising temperatures and extreme climate events such as floods, storms and heatwaves. These predictions are compounded by the projections from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which state that the world is heading towards a worst-case climate scenario unless actions are taken collectively in the very near future. Crop yields have stagnated since the start...

COBRA: a new European research project for organic plant breeding Organic Eprints
Pedersen, T.M.; Döring, T.F.; Baresel, P.; Borgen, A.; Finckh, M.R.; Howlett, S.A.; Ortolani, L.; Pearce, B.D.; Wolfe, M.S..
Development of organic plant breeding and seed production will have a valuable impact on organic plant production. Breeding of plant material adapted for organic agriculture is crucial in order to cope with stresses such as climate change, weeds and seed borne diseases. Conventional varieties may not meet the specific needs of organic agriculture. The use of plant material adapted to conditions of organic agriculture will have a positive effect on the productivity and sustainability of organic crop production.

Cocoa Yield Development in Alto Beni, Bolivia: Influence of Sites, Varieties and Years Organic Eprints
Schneider, Monika; Perez, Eucebio; Alcon, Freddy; Choque, Romero; Trujillo, German; Andres, Christian.
One of the most essential limiting factors of cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) productivity worldwide is pests and diseases. Each of the major production regions has its specific pests and diseases. Reported yield losses range from minor to almost 100 per cent. In Alto Beni, located in the Amazonian watershed of the department La Paz, Bolivia, the Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (FiBL) and its local partners are addressing several problems of cocoa producers using a participatory technology development approach. Problems were identified in a participatory way and are, in order of priority, i) to reduce the incidence of pests and diseases, mainly the cocoa mirid (Monalonion dissimulatum) and Frosty Pod Rot (Moniliophthora roreri); ii) to evaluate the...

Cocoa Yield in Bolivian On-Farm Trials 2010-2013 – Monitoring Outstanding Farmers and Comparing Clones and Sites Organic Eprints
Andres, Christian; Perez, Eucebio; Alcon, Freddy; Choque, Romero; Trujillo, German; Milz, Joachim; Schneider, Monika.
Cocoa (Theobroma cacao L.) trees have a lifespan of up to 100 years in their natural environment, the lower strata of tropical alluvial forests. Sustainability of global cocoa production is at stake due to the deterioration of soil fertility, high losses due to pests and diseases (P&D) and old tree stock. Producing cocoa in shaded, low input agroforestry systems offers a potential solution for achieving long-term productivity and sustainability. However, shade-tolerant cocoa clones are needed which are productive and resistant to P&D, as well as meeting the quality standards requested by the industry. In Bolivia, the cocoa mirid (Monalonion dissimulatum) and the novel disease Frosty Pod Rot (“Monilia” Moniliophthora roreri) are among the most...

Common bunt resistant wheat composite cross populations Organic Eprints
Steffan, Philipp; Borgen, Anders; Backes, Gunter; Rasmussen, Søren K..
Utilising diverse populations instead of single line varieties is expected to lead to a number of advantages in cereal production. These include reduced epidemics of plant diseases, improved weed competition and better exploitation of soil nutrients, resulting in improved yield stability. However, a number of challenges must be met before diverse wheat populations can be introduced into commercial wheat production: one of these is the development of breeding technologies based on mass selection which enable breeders and farmers to improve specific traits in populations and maintain diversity at the same time. BIOBREED is a project started in Denmark in 2011 to meet these challenges for wheat population breeding. The project is focusing on the development...

Community-based management of cultivated biodiversity - A French initiative on forage crops to design agro-ecological systems Organic Eprints
REY, Frederic; HAZARD, Laurent.
The over-simplification of modern intensive agro-ecosystems in terms of cultivated biodiversity had dramatically increased their vulnerability to stresses and perturbations. In order to create and use a higher specific and genetic diversity several community management seed systems (or “Seed Houses”) are being currently set up in France. In this country where most farmers are used to buying commercial seeds, these initiatives are considered innovative. They also raise several issues such as: how to obtain, improve and conserve adapted plant genetic resources? How farmers’ communities can organise themselves to produce and exchange seeds amongst their members? Which procedures, which quality thresholds, which skills and which tools must be developed? With...
